If you've been researching treatments for sun damage, redness or overall skin rejuvenation, you've probably come across BBL. Some clinics describe it as the latest breakthrough, while others recommend IPL.
So what's the difference?
The short answer may surprise you.
BBL Is an IPL
One of the biggest misconceptions in aesthetic medicine is that BBL and IPL are two completely different technologies.
They aren't.
BBL (BroadBand Light) is Sciton's brand name for its IPL system. Like other modern IPL devices, it uses broad-spectrum light to target pigment and blood vessels while stimulating the skin's natural repair processes.
That's not meant to diminish BBL. Sciton has built an excellent platform with thoughtful engineering and a strong reputation. But it's important to understand that BBL belongs to the IPL family—it isn't a separate category of treatment.

Why Does BBL Get So Much Attention?
Sciton deserves credit for producing a high-quality device.
BBL offers refinements such as advanced pulse control, excellent cooling and intuitive treatment software. These features can improve comfort, consistency and workflow for experienced providers.
Those are genuine advantages.
Where things become less clear is when marketing suggests that BBL produces results that other premium IPL systems simply can't achieve.
In our experience, that's an oversimplification.
Your Skin Doesn't Know the Logo
When light reaches your skin, it doesn't know whether it came from a Sciton, Venus, Lumenis or another reputable manufacturer.
It responds to the characteristics of the light itself.
Factors such as wavelength, energy, pulse duration, cooling and treatment technique all influence the final result.
Modern IPL systems from established manufacturers are built on the same scientific principles. While each platform has its own strengths, they all aim to achieve the same biological response.
Does BBL Produce Better Results?
Sometimes.
But not for the reasons you may think. For many common concerns—including sun damage, pigmentation, redness and visible blood vessels—the difference between two premium IPL systems is often much smaller than people expect.
This is where provider experience becomes far more important than the name on the machine.
The Most Important Part of Any IPL Treatment
Imagine giving the world's best chef a standard kitchen.
Now imagine giving someone with very little cooking experience the most expensive kitchen money can buy.
Which meal would you rather eat?
The same principle applies to aesthetic treatments.
Choosing the right settings, selecting appropriate candidates, recognizing when not to treat and adjusting treatments over time all come from experience. These decisions have a much greater influence on results than the logo printed on the handpiece.
What About "Forever Young BBL"?
You've probably heard claims that BBL can make skin behave more like younger skin.
This idea comes from published research showing that repeated IPL treatments can trigger changes associated with skin repair and renewal.
We think that's exciting.
Where we differ is in suggesting that this benefit belongs exclusively to one manufacturer's IPL system. Or, that's it exclusive to IPL alone, when there are plenty of available treatment options.
Repeated IPL treatments can improve overall skin quality over time. They can reduce pigmentation, calm redness and stimulate mild collagen remodeling. Together, these changes often leave skin looking brighter, smoother and healthier.
That's something we've observed in our own clients over many years of performing IPL treatments.
So Which Should You Choose?
Instead of asking whether you should choose BBL or IPL, we think a better question is:
Who is performing the treatment?
A skilled provider using a high-quality IPL system will consistently achieve excellent results because they understand the technology, know how to tailor treatments to each individual and have the experience to recognize what your skin needs.
The machine matters.
The provider matters more.
