Not Every Brown Spot is the Same.

One thing we've learned after treating pigmentation and redness for more than two decades is this: not every brown or red spot has the same cause. While many forms of sun damage respond extremely well to IPL, others may require a different approach. Identifying the difference is one of the most important parts of your consultation.

Age spots, freckles, sun spots, and many forms of UV-related pigmentation often respond beautifully to IPL treatment. Likewise, facial redness, visible capillaries, spider veins, and many vascular concerns can often be treated safely and effectively with medical-grade Intense Pulsed Light.

Successful treatment starts with understanding your skin. During your consultation, we'll assess the type of pigmentation or redness you're experiencing, review your skin history, and determine whether IPL is the most appropriate treatment for your goals. If we don't believe IPL is the right choice, we'll explain why and recommend a more suitable option.

When IPL is the right treatment, it is one of the most effective ways to reduce unwanted pigmentation and visible blood vessels while restoring a brighter, clearer, and more even-looking complexion.

What Is Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and How Does It Work?

IPL uses carefully controlled pulses of light that are attracted to pigment and tiny blood vessels beneath the skin. As the light energy is absorbed, your body gradually breaks down and clears away unwanted pigmentation and visible blood vessels over the weeks that follow treatment.

Because IPL targets unwanted pigment and vascular concerns while leaving the surrounding skin largely unaffected, treatments are generally well tolerated and involve little to no downtime. Over a series of treatments, many clients notice clearer skin, a more even complexion, and visible improvements in sun damage, brown spots, and redness.

What Improvements Can You Expect from IPL?

Most clients choose IPL because they're frustrated by brown spots, redness, or uneven skin tone. When IPL is the right treatment for your skin, these are some of the improvements clients commonly notice over the course of their treatment series.

Reduce the appearance of age spots, freckles, and sun-related pigmentation to reveal clearer, more even-looking skin.

Reduce Redness & Visible Capillaries

Reveal Brighter, More Even Skin

Is IPL Right for Your Skin Concern?

IPL can effectively treat many forms of sun damage, pigmentation, redness, and visible blood vessels. During your consultation, we'll determine whether your skin concern is suitable for IPL or whether another treatment is likely to produce better results.

IPL is commonly used to treat:

✔︎ Age spots and sun spots

✔︎ Freckles

✔︎ Sun-damaged skin

✔︎ Facial redness

✔︎ Rosacea-related redness

✔︎ Broken capillaries

✔︎ Spider veins

✔︎ Cherry angiomas

✔︎ Post-acne redness

What to Expect After Your IPL Treatment

Knowing what to expect after your IPL treatment can help you feel more confident throughout the healing process. While every client responds a little differently, most treatments follow a very similar pattern.

Immediately After Treatment

It's normal to experience mild redness and warmth immediately after treatment, similar to a light sunburn. Some clients may also notice localized swelling, which typically settles within a few days, although it can occasionally last up to a week depending on the treatment area and your skin's sensitivity.

Over the Next 7–14 Days

One of the most common questions we hear is, "Why did my brown spots get darker?"

This is actually an expected part of the healing process. Pigmented spots often darken before gradually flaking away as your skin naturally renews itself over the following one to two weeks.

Caring for Your Skin

During the healing period, keep your skin well moisturized, wear a broad-spectrum SPF every day, and avoid unnecessary sun exposure. Following your aftercare instructions helps protect your skin and allows your treatment results to develop as expected.

What We've Learned After Treating IPL Clients for More Than Two Decades

Something that often surprises first-time clients is that improvement doesn't happen overnight. Pigmentation fades gradually, redness settles over time, and your skin continues to improve as your body clears away the treated pigment and visible blood vessels.

Consistency plays an important role in achieving the best results. While some clients notice improvement after a single treatment, the best results are usually achieved over a series of treatments tailored to your skin and treatment goals.

Frequently asked questions

What body areas can I treat with IPL?

IPL can be used on many areas of the face and body where sun damage, pigmentation, redness, or visible blood vessels are present. Common treatment areas include the face, neck, chest, hands, arms, and legs. During your consultation, we'll determine whether IPL is the most appropriate treatment for your specific concern.

Who is a good candidate for IPL?

IPL is generally best suited to clients with lighter skin tones who are concerned about sun damage, age spots, freckles, facial redness, rosacea-related redness, or visible capillaries. During your consultation, we'll assess your skin type, the cause of your pigmentation or redness, and your treatment goals to determine whether IPL is the right choice for you.

How many IPL treatments will I need?

Many clients begin noticing improvement after their first treatment, but the best results are usually achieved through a series of three to four treatments, spaced 2 to 3 weeks apart. The number of treatments recommended depends on your skin concern, its severity, and how your skin responds throughout the treatment process.

Is IPL effective for broken capillaries and spider veins?

Yes. IPL is commonly used to treat many small facial blood vessels, including broken capillaries and facial spider veins. The light energy is absorbed by the blood vessel, allowing your body to gradually break it down and clear it away over time.

Is there any down time after IPL?

Most clients experience little to no downtime following IPL treatment. Mild redness and warmth are common immediately afterward and usually settle within a few hours. Pigmented spots often darken before gradually flaking away over the following 7–14 days, while redness and visible blood vessels continue to improve over the weeks that follow.

We'll provide personalized aftercare instructions to help your skin heal comfortably and achieve the best possible outcome.

"I had gone in for laser on my face for redness and broken veins.. Salin, explained very thoughtfully, that she likes to listen and work together with her clients. Salin proved just how great she is by being the best Laser tech I have ever been to. I should mention I have been doing this for 20 years. I am Scottish and prone to broken capillaries, red and blotchy skin. Salin has made a dramatic difference."(abbreviated)
