If you've spent any time on social media recently, you've probably heard about XERF. It's one of the newest radiofrequency skin tightening treatments and has attracted significant attention within the aesthetic industry and across social media.
Whenever a new technology enters the aesthetics industry, one of the first questions we hear is:
"Is it really better?"
What Is XERF?
XERF is a non-invasive skin tightening treatment that uses dual frequency monopolar radiofrequency (RF) energy to heat the deeper layers of the skin.
The goal is to stimulate collagen production, improve skin firmness, and gradually tighten the skin over the following weeks and months.
One reason XERF has attracted so much attention is its focus on delivering radiofrequency energy at multiple tissue depths, while improving patient comfort compared with some earlier monopolar radiofrequency treatments.
While XERF incorporates newer engineering features such as dual-frequency energy delivery and improved cooling, the underlying science isn't new. Radiofrequency has been used successfully for skin tightening for more than two decades.
Is XERF Really Different?
In our opinion, XERF is an evolution of existing radiofrequency technology—not a complete reinvention of it.
Although they differ in how they deliver radiofrequency energy, XERF, Thermage, Venus Legacy, and other established RF platforms all share the same overall goal—using controlled heat to stimulate collagen remodeling. Learn more about our Radiofrequency Skin Tightening treatments.
Every new generation of technology aims to improve comfort, treatment delivery, or efficiency, but the fundamental biological principle remains largely the same: encouraging your body's natural collagen response.
| Question | XERF | Our Perspective |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | Dual-frequency Monopolar radiofrequency | A newer generation of an established technology |
| Is the science new? | No, but builds on existing technology | Radiofrequency has been used for skin tightening for over 20 years |
| Primary Goal | Stimulate collagen and tighten skin | Same biological goal as other RF treatments |
| Current Buzz | Very High | Driven largely by recent marketing and social media exposure |
| Concerns Raised | Some physicians have questioned the potential for facial fat loss with high-energy monopolar RF | More long-term clinical data will help clarify these concerns |
| Our Opinion | Promising technology | Worth watching, but has it been proven to be dramatically superior to established RF devices? |
What About the Concerns Over Facial Fat Loss?
One of the biggest discussions surrounding XERF isn't whether it can tighten skin—it's whether high-energy monopolar radiofrequency treatments could unintentionally reduce facial fat in some patients. These concerns are not unique to XERF, and they do not establish that XERF has been shown to cause facial fat loss.
Some facial plastic surgeons and dermatologists have publicly expressed caution, particularly for individuals with naturally lean faces or those already experiencing age-related volume loss.
Some physicians have expressed concern that if energy reaches deeper adipose tissue in susceptible patients, unintended volume loss could occur. Others believe that, with appropriate patient selection and treatment protocols, the benefits outweigh the potential risks.
At this stage, there isn't universal agreement within the medical community. As with many aesthetic technologies, long-term clinical experience and continued research will help answer many of these questions.
Our Take
After more than 24 years of performing skin rejuvenation treatments, our impression is that XERF is more evolutionary than revolutionary.
We're always interested in new technology, but we're equally interested in long-term outcomes.
Our philosophy has never been to adopt a device simply because it's generating attention on social media. We prefer to watch the clinical evidence develop, listen to both enthusiastic and cautious voices within the medical community, and evaluate whether a technology offers a meaningful advantage for our clients.
Do we think XERF is a good technology?
Absolutely.
Do we think there's enough evidence yet to conclude it's dramatically better than every other established radiofrequency device?
Not at this point.
We genuinely welcome innovation in aesthetic medicine. Many of today's gold-standard treatments were once considered "new." We simply believe that time, clinical experience, and long-term patient outcomes are just as important as exciting product launches.
XERF is generally positioned as a premium-priced treatment. Whether that premium cost represents good value depends on your goals, your provider, and the results you're hoping to achieve.
Don't Buy the Machine—Buy the Provider
One of the biggest misconceptions in aesthetic medicine is that the newest machine automatically produces the best results.
In our experience, that's rarely true.
The quality of your consultation, your provider's understanding of facial anatomy, and choosing the right treatment for your skin will have a far greater impact on your results than the brand name printed on the side of the device.
Sometimes radiofrequency skin tightening is the right choice.
For other clients, microneedling, IPL photorejuvenation, or a carefully planned combination of treatments may produce a better outcome.
The best treatment isn't always the newest one—it's the one that's right for you.

Final Thoughts
New technology is exciting, and XERF may prove to be an excellent option for many people.
At Glow Luxe, we've learned that successful skin rejuvenation rarely comes down to a single machine.
It comes down to understanding your skin, selecting the right treatment, and working with an experienced practitioner who can tailor that treatment to your individual needs.
Technology will continue to evolve.
Great treatment planning never goes out of style.
Our goal isn't to criticize XERF or any other technology. Every aesthetic device has strengths and limitations, and new innovations continue to improve patient care. This article reflects our professional perspective based on more than 24 years of clinical experience, current evidence, and the ongoing discussions within the aesthetic medical community. As more long-term research becomes available, our understanding of these technologies will continue to evolve.
