Say Goodbye to Waxing, Shaving, Ingrowns. Hello laser hair removal.

Laser hair removal in Victoria BC

I’m still amazed that there are people out there shaving, waxing and plucking away hair. It’s time consuming and painful.   We all have better things to do with our time than deal with unwanted hair growth on a regular basis. In today’s marketplace, laser hair removal is an affordable and effective solution to keep skin smooth and hair free. Plus, you can say goodbye to ingrowns.

While there are many types of devices available, there are only a few wavelengths of light that are actually effective at “seeing” the hair. Both Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and Laser, in the correct bandwidth, can target and destroy the hair follicle, permanently disabling it from growing new hair. None of these devices are capable of ever treating blonde, gray or white hair effectively as the process of “selective photothermolysis” targets the darker pigments (melanin) in the hair (and skin). Have you ever noticed how a dark shirt absorbs heat in the sun, while a light colored shirt remains cool? it’s a little different, but you get the idea. Of course, if you do have white or blonde hair there is always electrolysis.

Researching the market, I've found a wide variety of information from treatment providers, some true and some not. Unfortunately it’s not always easy for the consumer to know what’s fact and what’s fiction. Two things I did hear quite often (both false) were “yes we can treat blonde hair” and “it will only take 2 or 3 treatments to get the result you want.” Remember, there are multiple cycles to the hair growth, and for this reason, anywhere from 4-10 treatments are generally required to get an ideal result.

IPL & Laser are both effective methods of removing unwanted hair, with IPL being a more versatile process allowing for a broader range of treatment on various skin colors.  I really love the fact that by focusing the energy right into the root of the hair, there is virtually no pain as you avoid heating the surrounding skin! (And who wants to burn anyway?)

Regardless of the route you decide to go, it’s super important to feel comfortable with the individual providing treatment, and to do a little research beforehand. And while price doesn’t always reflect the outcome, “really cheap” generally raises red flags for me personally.

One more thing, to prepare for treatment we want you to shave the area you are treating. And no, this won’t cause hair to grow in thicker, darker and scarier than ever. It’s a myth.
