Is Laser Hair Removal Right for You?

If you're tired of shaving, waxing, razor burn or recurring ingrown hairs, you've probably wondered whether laser hair removal would make life easier.

For the right person, it can.

But laser hair removal isn't automatically the best option for everyone. Hair colour, skin tone, the area being treated, your medical history and even what you expect from treatment can all affect whether it makes sense.

At Glow Luxe, we'd rather determine that before you commit to a treatment series.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal works by targeting pigment in the hair.

Because of that, dark, coarse hair generally responds best. The greater the contrast between the pigment in the hair and the surrounding skin, the easier it is for the laser to selectively target the hair follicle.

Modern laser systems can safely treat a much broader range of skin tones than earlier generations of technology, but treatment still needs to be selected and adjusted appropriately for the individual.

The easiest way to know whether you're a good candidate is simply to have the hair and skin assessed.

When Does Laser Hair Removal Make the Most Sense?

You may be a good candidate if you're tired of:

  • Shaving every few days

  • Regular waxing appointments

  • Razor burn or shaving irritation

  • Recurrent ingrown hairs

  • Coarse stubble

  • Managing hair in areas that are difficult to reach

  • Planning clothing, vacations or activities around hair removal

Some people want as much hair reduction as possible.

Others simply want less density.

Can Laser Hair Removal Help With Ingrown Hairs?

This is one of the reasons many people first ask us about treatment.

Ingrown hairs often occur when a hair grows back into or beneath the skin, and they can be particularly frustrating in areas that are frequently shaved or waxed.

By reducing the number and density of hairs growing in an area, laser hair removal can also reduce the opportunity for those hairs to become ingrown.

This can be particularly helpful around the bikini line, legs, underarms, beard and neck.

It doesn't mean every bump or irritation is caused by an ingrown hair, though. If something unusual is happening with your skin, it should be assessed before assuming laser is the answer.

What About Razor Burn and Shaving Irritation?

Repeated shaving can leave some people with redness, irritation, small cuts or persistent sensitivity. Waxing and depilatory creams can create their own problems for certain skin types.

Reducing the amount of hair that needs to be removed can make ongoing grooming considerably easier.

For some clients, that practical benefit matters just as much as having smoother skin.

Who Is Not a Good Candidate for Laser Hair Removal?

This is an important part of the conversation.

Blonde, grey and white hair generally doesn't contain enough pigment for conventional laser hair removal to work effectively.

Very light red hair and fine peach fuzz can also be poor targets.

If that's the type of hair you want removed, more laser sessions won't necessarily solve the problem.

We've written separately about why laser hair removal doesn't work well on blonde, grey or white hair, because this is something we think people should understand before spending money on treatment.

There are also circumstances involving medications, tanning, certain medical conditions or skin changes that may require treatment to be postponed or avoided.

That's what the consultation is for.

Does Laser Hair Removal Permanently Remove Hair?

We prefer to describe laser hair removal as long-term hair reduction.

A successful series can substantially reduce the amount of hair growing in a treated area, and remaining hair may become finer or less noticeable.

But biology doesn't stop after treatment.

Hormonal changes, aging and other factors can influence future hair growth, so some people eventually choose occasional maintenance treatments.

We think that's a more realistic expectation than promising that every hair will disappear forever.

How Many Treatments Will You Need?

Laser hair removal requires a series because hairs grow in cycles.

At any given time, only some of the hairs in an area are in the stage where they can be effectively targeted.

For many body areas, we commonly plan approximately six to eight treatments, although this varies according to the area, hair density, hormonal influences and individual response.

Facial hair and hormonally influenced areas can behave differently and may require a longer-term approach.

We reassess as treatment progresses rather than assuming everyone will respond in exactly the same way.

Does Laser Hair Removal Hurt?

You'll feel the treatment, but most clients find it manageable.

The sensation is often described as a brief snap or pulse of heat. Areas with dense, coarse hair can feel more noticeable than areas where the hair is finer or more sparse.

Modern treatment systems also use cooling to improve comfort and protect the skin.

As hair density decreases over a treatment series, many clients find sessions become easier as well.

Is Laser Hair Removal Worth the Cost?

That depends on what you're comparing it with—and what the convenience is worth to you.

Someone who has waxed every month for years may look at laser very differently from someone who spends a few minutes shaving occasionally.

The value isn't just the price of razors or waxing appointments.

For many people, it's also:

  • Less time spent grooming

  • Fewer waxing appointments

  • Less frequent shaving

  • Less stubble

  • Less irritation from repeated hair removal

  • Greater freedom around clothing, travel or activities

Whether that makes laser worthwhile is ultimately personal.

Sometimes convenience is enough.

What Should You Expect From a Laser Hair Removal Consultation?

We want to see the actual hair you're hoping to treat.

We'll look at:

  • Hair colour

  • Hair thickness

  • Hair density

  • Skin tone

  • Treatment area

  • Previous hair-removal methods

  • Relevant medications or medical history

  • Your expectations for hair reduction

We'll also ask what result you're actually hoping for.

You may want virtually no visible hair.

You may just want to shave less often.

Or you may want to reduce coarse hair that's causing repeated irritation.

Those goals can lead to different treatment plans.
